An 8.5 minute exposure of the sunset over a cotton field in Alabama. This was quite a few years ago shortly before Saucer Farms was ready to harvest it. I believe this was the last year for cotton as Saucer Farms (2021). Certainly after learning of long exposure for landscapes, so after my first trip to Yellowstone.
I lacked the filters necessary to create one long exposure so this is several images combined that ranged from 20 to 30 seconds a piece. I think it totally worked!
I really loved working cotton. Don't get me wrong, I understand the complications from the market - farmers really do get the worst end of the deal - but still, if not for the market and costs, I wish we could have kept at it. Photographically, cotton is one of my favorite fields to photograph families and children in. Soy just doesn't have the same look (or smell).
My job was on the module builder. That's the large tractor-trailer-looking rectangular module that you often see folks sitting on with two levers working back and forth, packing the cotton. It was so peaceful (most of the time) just listening to the rumbling sounds and getting a good packing rhythm going. And nothing beats the sunsets with the tractors and lights and fields.
