The Buck Whitetail Deer - Wood

A couple of years ago I was asked to teach an online, one-hour course with the International Society of Animal Photographers. I still don't know how many people were logged on watching - I didn't have access to the view count - but from what I could tell, it was a lot.
I had been prepping for it and knew what I was going to go with - stylistically, anyway. I just didn't know what animal I was going to use. I scoured through everything I had. I needed it to be simple enough to cover an hour's time but good enough that it wouldn't be a throwaway. Then I saw this whitetail buck from my trip to Colorado.

We were in the car riding down the trail and he was with a buddy and a couple of does. The rut was over so it was just another day for them all together. He was eyeing the doe, though, so I would guess there was still some lingering desires. That's what he was doing here and why he looks so perfectly posed.

I used my Photoshop brushes to achieve a graphite-style look and created light where we needed it for the class. I ended up being able to finish it in that time but I did a bit more work when the class was over, cleaning up some things I may have had to rush through.
I'll likely be making this more customizable when I find a doe that can go with it. Make it available to couples to have as some accent pieces in their homes.
