The Falls in Mist - Print & Canvas

It was cold. It was raining. It was misty and foggy. It was dark and murky. It was so many things that "beautiful" was not quite what I was experiencing in the moment. I photographed anyway because how often am I in my favorite National Park? The falls were roaring but there was no light to illuminate the rocks, the canyon, or create the perfect scene with the rainbow that appears.
Yet when I look at this I am mystified. It was one of those images that I thought would be a throwaway - more of something that I'd have on my phone than anything else. Surprisingly, I got home and discovered that I actually do love it. I can't quite put my finger on it.
It's a mystery and I think that's the point. Mystified described it perfectly. Not only that but the fact that my group and I were the only people at Artist Point in Yellowstone that morning for a whole hour. When I look at this, I think of how I almost slipped down the cold, wet stone steps at the overlook; the "moose dance" the group did in the parking lot; the four o'clock wake-up call and the sound of the rain on the tin roof at the cabin. I see warmth and I see cold. I hear the water crashing down in the distance.
When I see this, I'm in my favorite place.
